On August 3, 1949 President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress officially designating June
14th of each year as National Flag Day. A program designed to honor the American flag, "Avenue of Flags", was developed and initially funded by the Shirley Charitable Foundation. "Avenue of Flags" continues with the support of the
Shirley Fire Department and the Shirley Department of Public Works.
Since 1999, individual donations to the Avenue of Flags program have been made to honor
individuals and organizations or to commemorate the memory of deceased family members.
These donations have expanded the number of flags on display to nearly double the original
amount. A plaque in the lobby of the Town Offices lists the names of those honored with a
commemorative flag in Shirley's Avenue of Flags.

Celebrate Shirley is an umbrella program under the direction of the Shirley Charitable
Foundation. Celebrate Shirley works to enhance and promote town-wide programs in Shirley by
promoting specific events to the general public. The primary purpose of Celebrate Shirley is to
create a sense of community, through its premise of a non-political, non-agenda organization.

Established in 2003, the Shirley Outdoor Summer Concert Series provides free musical
entertainment for the community. With the generous support of local businesses and merchants,
music of the big band era, mellow jazz tones, today’s popular sounds, classic country tunes,
children’s favorites and patriotic melodies fill the summer air in Shirley. Families, friends, and
neighbors are welcome to join us as we "Celebrate Shirley" and enjoy summer in New England.
Information about the summer concert schedule can be found at www.celebrateshirley.org.
